Thrive Method Weekly: New Recipes + What your gut has to do with your glow
Friday, June 19, 2026
Hello!
Week three of Gut Health month and this one connects to something we don't talk about enough: skin. So much of the conversation around skin after 40 focuses on what we put on it, serums, retinol, SPF, when a huge piece of the picture is actually what's happening on the inside. This week's Method Moment gets into the gut-skin connection, and it changes how a lot of skin frustration starts to make sense.
Why Your Gut Might Be the Reason Your Skin Looks the Way It Does
Skin issues get treated as a surface problem almost by default. Something looks dull, dry, inflamed, or just different than it used to, and the instinct is to reach for a new serum or change up the routine. But for a lot of women over 40, the real story is happening much deeper than the surface, down in the gut.
Here’s the connection.
The gut and skin communicate constantly through what’s called the gut-skin axis. When the gut microbiome is balanced and diverse, it produces compounds that support skin barrier function, reduce systemic inflammation, and help regulate the immune responses that show up on the skin as redness, breakouts, or sensitivity. When the microbiome is out of balance, that communication breaks down, and skin often reflects it before anything else does.
Inflammation is the biggest piece of this. We’ve talked about chronic low-grade inflammation this month already, and skin is one of the first places it tends to show up visibly. Dullness, puffiness, a loss of that bounce skin used to have, even adult acne that seems to appear out of nowhere in our 40s and 50s, can all trace back to inflammation that started in the gut.
Hydration is connected too, in a way that’s easy to miss. A healthy gut microbiome supports the skin’s ability to retain moisture from the inside. This is part of why skin can look dry and tired even with a solid topical routine. The product is doing its job, but if the gut isn’t supporting hydration internally, the topical layer is working against a deficit.
And the gut affects collagen, indirectly but meaningfully. Chronic inflammation accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for skin’s structure and bounce. A calmer gut means a calmer inflammatory environment, which means collagen has a better chance of doing its job.
None of this means skincare doesn’t matter. It absolutely does, and a good routine layered on top of gut-supportive eating is the combination that actually moves the needle. But it does mean that some of the most frustrating, stubborn skin issues respond better to what’s happening at the dinner table than what’s happening at the bathroom sink.
The foods that support this are the same ones we’ve been building all month. Fiber-rich plants, fermented foods, omega-3s, polyphenol-rich berries and greens, healthy fats. Feed the gut well and the skin tends to follow.
